At St. Mary C of E (VA) Infant School, our aim is to ensure that all pupils take part in high quality PE and sport so that every child can improve and achieve in line with their potential. Through effective learning in PE we promote young people’s health, safety and well-being. We endeavour to inspire our young people to be participants in sports for life.
“A high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities. It should provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect.” (The National Curriculum DFE 2013)
Schools receive PE and sport premium funding based on the number of pupils in years 1 to 6. The purpose of this funding is to provide children with opportunities to develop and maintain a balanced and healthy lifestyle. The funding can be used to provide children with experiences that they may not have access to outside of school, as well as purchasing better equipment or up-skilling staff. The PE and sport funding is given to schools to provide a legacy for children; giving them opportunities to explore different sports and activities that they hopefully will carry on into their later life.
Schools must use the funding to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of PE and sport they offer.
This means that you should use the premium to:

Every child in EYFS and KS1 has two hours of physical education every week. Children are also encouraged to be active before and after school through use of the play equipment and climbing frames in the playground. To create an environment where play is positive, toys and equipment are available in the playground for the children to play with during break times and lunch times. As well as this, the Trim Trail and climbing frame also encourage children to be active during their breaks. Extra-curricular clubs are provided at our school including football through Plymouth Argyle, Plymouth Albion offering a TAG rugby club to KS1 and EXIM Dance offering a street dance club to all ages. All of these clubs are currently being funded by the school using our Sports Premium. We also work closely with these clubs to signpost children to clubs outside of school.
Through the PSSP, the children have the opportunity to access Level 2 competitions, where they compete against other schools. They can also attend multiskills events, dance festivals, cricket tournament and SEND specific opportunities such as Bocchia. .
Sporting success is celebrated within school, both in class and through our weekly newsletter. Every year, the school has a Sports Week. This is an opportunity for children to access a range of different sports throughout the week as well as learning about the importance of a healthy and active lifestyle. Sports week also incorporates our school sports day to which families are invited.
